Benign Moles - Surgical Treatments of Skin Cancers

Benign moles are formations that require a doctor's follow-up and should not be ignored. Decembranous moles are benign moles that require a doctor's follow-up and should not be ignored. Any abnormal development on the skin is called a "skin lesion". These lesions can carry the risk of changing from benign to malignant. In addition, since these lesions can be benign or malignant, it is important that they are differentiated from each other. A diagnosis is usually made after the appearance of lesions and examination, but surgically removed moles must necessarily be pathologically examined. Because even moles that are considered benign by clinical diagnosis have a small chance of turning out to be malignant.

In this article, we will provide information about the surgical treatments of benign moles and skin cancers.

Do Benign Moles Require Treatment?

Benign skin lesions do not spread even if they are not surgically removed. Medically, moles called nevus may grow in diameter over time, and new ones may appear as you get older. In addition, there may be brown skin lesions at the same height as the skin, which occur due to lack of protection from the sun's rays, hormonal effects or aging. They can also be treated medically or surgically.

In cases where some skin lesions are not removed surgically, there is a risk that they may turn into malignant (melanoma) as time progresses. Brown and red lesions called "actinic keratosis" due to lack of protection from the sun's rays and not using sunscreen creams are the best examples of this. There is a risk that these lesions may develop into squamous cell skin cancer. Lesions that turn into malignant grow over time and spread to other parts of the body.

How to Distinguish Moles From Malignant Melanoma?

In order to prevent melanoma, it is necessary to regularly examine the moles on your body. According to recent studies, some types of moles have a greater risk of turning into malignant. Moles that have been around since birth and moles that are different from normal, called "atypical", are in this group.

The differences between Decubitus and melanoma (skin cancer) are as follows:

  • The shape of the mole is symmetrical, the melanoma is asymmetrical in shape.
  • Moles have smooth boundaries, skin cancer has uneven boundaries.
  • I completely consist of the same color, but there are different colors in skin cancer.
  • The size of a mole can be considered small, while the size of a melanoma is larger.
  • I remain the same, but there is a change and growth in melanoma.
  • Skin cancers are divided into melanoma and non-melanoma in total. The most important reason for these two types of skin cancer in question is not to protect yourself from the sun's rays.

Removal of Skin Lesions

It is absolutely necessary to seek help from a plastic surgeon about the removal of skin lesions. Since these are lesions that seem simple, many surgeons, even some dermatologists, can afford to intervene. But those who are experienced in this matter are plastic surgeons. Plastic surgeons can remove these lesions from deeper borders, with less risk and leaving fewer scars. The removed lesions are necessarily sent for pathological examination.

Brown formations on the skin, often characterized as moles, and their medical name is “nevus”. These moles in question can come from birth, as well as appear in later periods of life. Moles can be in the same plane as the skin or fluffy. They can gradually grow. They are usually removed due to the risk of cosmetic or malignant transformation.

Nevus can be distinguished from melanoma, which is usually malignant. Melanomas can be brown, as well as red, white, black or variegated. If it is suspected that it may turn into malignant, the lesions should be removed from very wide boundaries. Sometimes, after removal of these lesions, skin transplants (grafts, flaps) may be required to repair the removed site.

Patients with this type of lesions on the face are usually worried that these lesions will be removed by surgical methods and that scars will remain after the procedure. Therefore, skin lesions should be removed by plastic surgeons. After the surgical operation applied to different areas of the face, their recovery, healing process and recovery time are also different. Surgical methods to be applied according to the area where the lesions will be removed also vary. The surgeon who will perform the application must have complete mastery of all these techniques.
